Cemetery In The Late Afternoon

As I’ve said before, I strongly believe we are not just meant to see things, but we are meant to see them when we see them.

Isn’t it wonderful that we live in world that’s constantly changing. The sun moves through the clouds across the sky. Trees and flowers grow, bloom, and eventually die. The wind blows the wildflower seeds across the swaying grass to find a safe place for them to take root. A bird lands on a branch and shakes off the leaf which drifts down to the ground below.

I had walked through Lutheran Cemetery so many times in my lifetime it would be impossible to count. As a young boy, I rode my bike through it, and it served as a convenient shortcut from Middle Village to Glendale especially on foot. I know this might sound creepy to some, but when you live in the “cemetery belt” of New York City, it’s just a way of life. So nothing seemed out of the ordinary when I walked along the cobblestone paths yesterday. I had a little over an hour before the gates closed, and the sun hung low in the autumn sky.

Almost immediately I felt as if I was entering a place I had never been before. Sure, I recognized some of the statues and stones I had photographed in the past, but everything just seemed different, alive almost. I saw things through eyes I had never seen through before. I took a few photos, I was more focused and direct then ever before.

I saw what I wanted, and I got it.

It was a good day.

Several things strike me in this post. One — I have said on many occasions that “images call out to me or speak to me.” My husband shakes his head at that….but when I am truly “in the moment” I truly believe that images speak to me. The second — guess where I went to shoot on Wednesday. Yup. You guessed it. The cemetery. I shot some images I’m pleased with but NONE of them can hold a candle to your series. I am so captivated with the shadow of the tree in the first image. And, the second image — well, it is stunning. Once again, great work!

I guess I’ve walked through that old cemetery myself a few times and I reconize exactly where that last picture was taken. The cemetery can be a great place to see things differently in many ways. Do you know where th monument to the General Slocum disaster is? You should see that when the sun strikes it in certain ways. Almost sounds like I’d trying to get you to take a picture or two, doesn’t it? And why not? All of yours are great and they get better every time.

  5. Hi Brian
These are wonderful images. I particularly like the simplicity of the macro shot with the cross in the background. Very nice work and a great blog.

    Keep up the excellent work!

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I like this series.

The first one….the colors are remarkable!
The 2nd one – how amazing that you captured the flower and then the cross so amazingly in the DOF. Now that’s creativity!
I love sunfare so I love the 4th one!
Colors in the 3rd and last one rock!

  9. You sure found some color! Usually cemetaries are quite dull in that department, thus giving off that creepy feel you mentioned.

“I strongly believe we are not just meant to see things, but we are meant to see them when we see them.” This is the truth and can apply to so many things in life…even relationships. When it’s time to become aware we usually find a way to do it.
